The Cloud Catcher, Université des Métiers Carrefour

Disruptor and Educator Building

Saclay, France

Carrefour group, always at the forefront of technological, social and digital innovation, and as the Europe´s n·1 and the world´s n·2, intends to take up its leadership role by carrying the ambition of a sustainable society and the idea of social responsibility. Its will to embrace the circular economy, the “CradletoCradle” strategic thinking, highlights its everyday commitment in all the company´s jobs. The group therefore decided to implement the campus “Université des Métiers”.

This professional training center should also be considered as a “satellite in the countryside” of the current Carrefour´s headquarters in Massy, as a natural extension allowing its employees to work in a totally different environment.

The site is located at the center of the plateau de Saclay, a territory of peri-urban agriculture known as the region´s grain basket, near the new urban campus Paris-Saclay about 20km from Paris. It is well connected with the Orly airport, some major highways, two RER stations and the line 18 of the “Grand Paris Express” by 2024: it contributes to the Parisian region´s influence. The site is also located near the World Competitive Cluster System@tic Paris-Région.

THE “CLOUDS-CATCHER”

In this large and poetic rural landscape surrounding the site, bathed in morning mists, the building of the Université des Métiers will be held, as a natural body enriching the landscape. The project is willing to communicate the respect of the territory where the productive landscape is the main pattern. It intends to embrace it by a discrete, sober, radical but friendly integration. We will work around the water cycle issue: the “clouds catcher” offers an ancestral, smart, elegant and sensitive system composed of recycled polyamide meshes stretched on metallic modules, capable to capture the clouds´ water (haze, mists) pushed by the wind. These meshes will serve as a cover for certain parts of the façade and will enable to dematerialize the building as we take them away from the facades in a concentric way.
