Open to the city, for multiple uses and the public, the water factory (l’Usine des eaux) reveals its great urban potential. Nowadays, a monumental footprint and silent extends in the city. In the future, an exceptional site which will introduce an innovative program, which will address the neighborhood to the larger metropolitan territory.

The exceptional character of the Water Factory (l’Usine des eaux) lies in the dimension of the its footprint (even brought back at 6 ha), in the historical identity of the site and its amazing hydraulic infrastructure, due to its inscription in the great landscape of the Seine, in its monumental architecture (Volume, scripture, and sense) … Therefore, a whole set of magnitudes, strongly enhances any intention a project. For that reason, we firstly highlight the value of a wide empty void, which opens to the landscape of the Seine formed by the basin plateau. Moreover, we preserve its unique topography, the artificial soil of a resilient platform to the flood. The Water Factory (l’Usine des eaux) is not quite an industrial wasteland. Outdoor pools, far from remaining in the state of landscape relics will become productive new utilities: mesocosms, live laboratories, aquaculture, and market gardening with its commercial loop are offered by introducing a food concept store, spa-fitness, urban camping, water elements, etc.

Thus, the project has a total capacity of 65,000m2 surface area, of which 15,000m2 are rehabilitated (inside the volume of the nave) or rebuilt. The great nave of Dominique Perrault (240m long) is fully preserved and largely rehabilitated to open up to Avenue J. Jaurés in which the back is turned and new uses are welcome.

The materiality of the architecture follows the principles of the circular economy and recovers the demolition waste in a new base made of gabions, which intends to guarantee the working memory of Ivry-Sur Seine by brick and the technological innovation with wooden buildings.
